Unlike the many conferences you may participate in, where your attentions are drawn by the variety of hats you wear, NCAMTE provides an opportunity for you to focus on your craft as a mathematics teacher educator - to examine and discuss current issues in mathematics teacher education and professional development and share related ideas and information. This year's conference will be in the form of a retreat to design a program of study that
-
At the university level, may lead to a graduate certificate in K-5 Mathematics
At the state level, may lead to a K-5 Mathematics Specialist endorsement
At the national level, may lead to a national K-5 Mathematics Specialist certification
Presentations, panels and workshops led by the Cisco Learning K-5 Mathematics Academy national advisory board will help us reflect on this issue. Our goal is to leave the week with a draft for a proposed program of study including five courses that would be developed and offered throughout the state and across the nation.
CLI seeks to provide a national solution that enable our youth to be successful in mathematics by collaborating with teachers who inform their practice through investigation of instructional practices. CLI will accomplish this goal through partnering with districts, universities and other non-profit organizations to create and sustain professional learning experiences facilitated by teacher leaders.
CLI and its partners are committing resources to change the way mathematics is taught from a traditional lecture and worksheet mode to one that engages students in examining and solving rich mathematical problems that have relevancy to the students. However, to teach this way requires that teachers have a rich knowledge of: mathematics, mathematical pedagogical content knowledge, and how students learn mathematics.
CLI partnerships recognize that it is equally important that teachers are members of a group, led by someone they know and trust, to study the learning needs of their students in mathematics and to chat about what works about a particular lesson - and what does not work - as they investigate their instructional practice.
The Cisco Learning K-5 Mathematics Specialists Academy builds on the strengths of the Cisco Networking Academy by providing a blended learning program that combines a centralized curriculum and standards-based testing delivered over the Internet with local instruction. The following individuals have agreed to each lead the course development efforts.

The NCAMTE retreat begins Sunday, May 18, with registration at 5:30 PM and concludes on Friday, May 23 at 1:30 PM. All conference events are scheduled at the Mid Pines Inn in Southern Pines. All conference fees, including lodging and meals, are provided. Each participant completing the retreat will receive a stipend of $500 to help defray any additional travel expenses. Participation will be limited to NC university (or college) teams of mathematicians and/or mathematics educators. Generally we prefer each university to send two representatives; however, based on space availability we will honor an institution's request to include from one to four participants.
